Goddesses play an important role in Sri Lankan life.

Many feature in the Hindu religion and are adopted

by some Sri Lankan Buddhists. Goddesses can bring

comfort and also empower women.  They are strong

forces with many positive attributes.

Some believers see a statue as a conduit to the deity.  By meditating with the statue, offering the statue floral gifts, and lighting oil lamps around the statue, devotees believe the connection with the deity can be enhanced. Chanting special mantras for deities also help with this connection.
